What does it take to be a chief nurse?
Maria O’Brien from Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust discusses her responsibilities as a Chief Nurse. Could this be your nursing career path?
As chief nurse at Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust, Maria O’Brien has responsibility for 4,500 registered nurses and allied health professionals. She explains her role.
Although she is now chief nurse at a large London trust, Maria O’Brien says there was never a grand plan to achieve a top job.
‘I’ve had the kind of career where I’ve done things that have interested me, rather than followed a typical straight route,’ says Ms O’Brien. ‘While some people know at an early stage of their career where they want to be, I was never entirely sure, but I knew I enjoyed variety and challenge.’
After qualifying in 1988 at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London, Ms O’Brien specialised in cardiac and intensive care before moving into a variety of managerial posts, including executive director of nursing.
A huge advocate of professional development and education, a key element of her approach as chief nurse is helping staff develop to their full potential. ‘Whatever stage you’re at in your career, there is always something to learn,’ she says.
As a leader, Ms O’Brien is inquisitive. ‘I always want to know. I’m quite hands-on and visible and I like to go out to services. I need to be able to see what happens on the front line and not just imagine it.
‘I want to hear what’s great about the work they do – and what they’re struggling with too. People are clear in terms of what I expect from them, but I’m also supportive. I have an open door.’
