Oncology nurse consultant Jeanette Ribton explains what her role as a cancer care nurse involves and how she uses her advanced skills to make complex nursing decisions.
Jeanette Ribton is nurse consultant in colorectal oncology at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Merseyside. As a consultant nurse at one of the UK’s leading cancer centres, Jeanette Ribton is responsible for assessing, diagnosing, treating and prescribing for colorectal cancer patients.
Her band 8 consultant nurse job was introduced at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in 2018, and Ms Ribton works with two medical oncologists, providing a tertiary outreach service in two local district general hospitals.
The role is highly autonomous and is structured around the four pillars of advanced practice: clinical practice, leadership and management, research, and education.
Ms Ribton, who has a master’s in advanced practice and a non-medical prescribing qualification, uses her advanced skills to make complex decisions in the clinical environment, along with transformational leadership skills to influence, inspire and motivate colleagues.
