Free CPD for nurses

RCNi has a programme of free continuing professional development (CPD) webinars for nurses and healthcare professionals on a wide range of clinical topics, providing an opportunity for nurses and healthcare professionals to add to their nursing knowledge, share best practice and find out about the latest development in a particular clinical setting.

Exploring clinical trials in a cancer setting

Our CPD webinar on Tuesday 9 May 2023 explored clinical trials in a cancer setting, looking at ways non-research nurses can play a vital role in facilitating clinical trials in the hospital or healthcare setting where they work.

With clinical trials becoming increasingly complex, the cancer research landscape is changing. From the management of more extreme side effects to the potential requirement for ITU beds, it is even more important that the whole clinical team have an awareness and understanding of research embedded in their standard of patient care and routine delivery.

This CPD webinar will help you to learn about the practicalities of engaging in clinical trials and balancing clinical care with research responsibilities. Find out ways to help change the research culture and improve the availability and accessibility of patient trials.

Within this practical and informative webinar, expert speakers with hands-on professional experience of clinical trials unite, all of which is made possible through the sponsorship of Cancer Research UK.

Nurses sharing best practice in this CPD webinar

Hear from oncology nurses who carry out clinical research across the UK as they share best practice and discuss some of the challenges they face in setting up clinical trials.

  • Emma Williams, Haematology Trials Unit Manager, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and Supporting Improvement Through Research Award Winner, RCN Wales Nurse of the Year Awards 2021 talks about what clinical trials are and what they mean for nurses and cancer outcomes.
  • Bethan Ingram, Teenage Cancer Trust Senior Nurse on increasing availability and accessibility of clinical trials for young people and TYA professionals
  • Phil Whelan, Macmillan CNS, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on overcoming challenges involving the oncology trials team
  • Ben Hood, CRUK Research Nurse Consultant, Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust on the cancer patient journey into early phase clinical trials: challenges and solutions to managing patients’ expectations

There is also a panel discussion about the nurse role and the practicalities of engaging in clinical trials, and how to balance clinical care and research responsibilities.

Gain a greater awareness and understanding of what clinical research is and the challenges and opportunities clinical research can have for all nurses.
